Letter From Pastor Luther - May 7th, 2020

Week 9

Hello again, brothers and sisters in Christ!

It is difficult to know where to begin these days.  Do we speak of the hardship that so many are forced to confront, through no fault of their own?  Do we reflect on the loneliness and despair that have overwhelmed most us? Focus on those who have died from this terrible plague?  Do we choose to enter into the vitriol that sees one side blaming another for inadequate preparedness or inept response to times of crisis?  Or do we make the holy choice to cease navel gazing and to proclaim the gospel and to enter into the service of all of the folks with whom God has blessed us?  That, my friends, is precisely what we’re doing!

Incarnation Lutheran Church,...your church, continues to be hard at work, seeking to proclaim how good God has been to all of us, and to be of service to all those in need.  There is no doubt that this is a very strange time for all of us, but it is, as usual, God’s time! Let’s do our best to remember that, in all that we do. In good times or in challenging moments, God’s message of salvation remains.  And it is our privilege to share it! This just happens to be a challenging time.

Insofar as there is no current plan for re-opening churches in California, we’ve taken a decision to remain producing virtual worship opportunities through the month of May.   Before the end of this month, we’ll reevaluate on the basis of the most current information from the state government and the best medical advice. We do have three new things to which we look forward though, as we continue with a new way to nurture our community.

1). We’ll be initiating a new book study/Bible study on Wednesday evenings, immediately after the evening devotion.  (c. 7:20 pm). It will be in a zoom meeting format, and all you have to do to get there is click the link below. It is called, “Surprised by Hope” based on the book by N.T. Wright.

    2) The profound generosity of the people of faith in this community have made it possible for us to make a significant donation to the food pantry of Interfaith Community Services.  It’s shelves are bare, but the demand for food has more than doubled. In this way, we are feeding the hungry, together! Thank you Incarnation!

    3) Another exciting possibility that is before us, is truly a mission opportunity that was recently brought to, and embraced by the Local Mission Committee.  It is a response to the aforementioned shortage of food at ICS. We will be holding two drop off times per week, for any of you who wish to bring in the badly needed supplies.  These items will be dropped at ICS the same day. The schedule for dropping of food donations at Incarnation will be:

Tuesdays: 8:30 am to 11:30 am, front parking lot @ church

Fridays:   8:30 am to 11:30 am, front parking lot @ church

The most needed items at Interfaith are:

  • Food - Mac N Cheese, Cereals, Breakfast Items, Canned/Jar Fruit, and Chili/Canned Protein

  • Non-Food Pantry Items - deodorant, Razors/Shave Cream, and Sunscreen

Our regular opportunities will continue on as usual:

On a regular, but occasional basis, our Pastoral Care team, comprised of the Vicars, the Incarnation Friends, and the Stephen Ministers, along with Pastor Tim, are calling to our entire membership to check in on folks, and to see how they’re doing.  Thank you to all involved.

Every weekday from Monday through Friday, Pastor Tim hosts a “check-in” time for folks, just to say hi, and to ensure that everyone is doing well.   Please join It’s a zoom meeting that begins at 2 pm everyday, and to get there, click here:

Every day, from Monday though Saturday evening, Ministry staff, (and we’re hoping, special guests) will be offering an evening devotion at 7 pm.  The devotions appear on Facebook Live and are later uploaded to our website. To access them live, (at 7 pm), please go to:

Our regular Sunday worship is live on our YouTube channel at 10 am on Sunday morning, and is found here:

It is my prayer that this missive finds you all well and strong, as we move through this time of challenge together.  Please know that you are all in my prayers. Our God is merciful and loving, and his grace to us, knows no bounds. Remember, we’re in God’s hands.  And if there is anything we can do to serve you, any help you need, and conversation you want to share....please don’t hesitate to call. We are here for you.

    In the risen Christ’s service,

    Pr. Luther
