Week 13 (June 3, 2020)

Greetings sisters and brothers in Christ:

So much has happened in this past week.

Covid 19 seems to have taken a bit of a back seat in public interest these days, for the matter we are confronting now is even less manageable and more reprehensible than the virus that we struggle to survive.  The issue is of course, the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis.  The systemic racism that permitted this heinous act, has given rise to a multiplicity of reactions; everything from outright denial, to impassioned protest, to opportunistic and unwarranted violence.  There is a truth that we are reluctant to address in our country, and it is that this systemic racism is within each of us in subtle and invisible ways.  It is that reality that gives rise to the abuse of power by those who somehow feel entitled to exercise their perceived “authority” over others.  We don’t want to see that innate racial bias as “my problem,” but if you look honestly, you cannot help but see it’s there, in you.  It’s altogether quite overwhelming and entirely disheartening.  But thanks be to God, even in this, God is with us to help us overcome all, even our own weaknesses...

My counsel remains the same:  Be Jesus in the world.  Let the world see in your actions and words and faith and life, a reflection of your savior.  Let that be our proclamation.  Seek not to be served, but to serve...and not selectively, but to whomever the good Lord puts in your path who needs your help.  I pray that God will forgive our inaction, apathy and indifference to this societal evil, and strengthen our resolve to embrace all of God’s children as our real brothers and sisters.  It starts with us.

We continue to persevere in the provision of ministry in the best way we know how.  We are learning daily how to “do church,” and those lessons change regularly as we try to figure out state and other regulations governing our potential re-opening.  Maintaining social distance within our worship space, maintaining social distance through ingress and egress, conducting worship without any communal singing or speaking, distributing the elements for the Eucharist safely....etc., etc.  These are challenging matters to address, but the staff, executive and council have them all under discussion.  We’ve no date to re-open just yet, but are working toward being able to do so, when permitted, and as safely as we can.

I want to thank you all again for your remarkable generosity.  We have to date helped people with food, shelter and healthcare who were unlikely to get help elsewhere.  To date we’ve expended over $12,000 in COVID relief funds.  Thank you!  Your blessing is becoming a blessing for so many others!  Thank you!

Please know that all the elements we’ve initiated over time remain:  Bible readings by email, Wednesday evening Bible Study, Evening Devotions, Worship on Sunday morning, etc.  Please check our website, and look for the link to “ILC Online Activities.”  You’ll find all the information there!

I hope that you also know, that we are here for you.  You may be down or discouraged and feel that you have no one to whom to reach out.  Please know that you do!  Your church is here for you!  I know that I feel that way...Please call if there is anything with which I can help.  I have Pr. Tim and Deacon Mindy’s permission to share the same invitation.  We are here for you!

As we traverse these sad times together, please know that you are blessed.  God has blessed you with the knowledge that despite your sinfulness, your salvation is assured by God!  You are never alone.  We are one in Christ, always.  And, you are being prayed for...every single day!  Remain healthy, stay safe, and above all else, be Jesus in the world!

            Pr. Luther
