A Spirit of Change

Watch the video:

I am not a fashion icon. I have no particular fashion sense. I do like symmetry and good order, so I’d never wear two different socks, but they don’t need to be designer socks. Being color blind doesn’t help these limitations. I tend to stick with plain colors (usually black), because I can’t mess that up too much. I don’t view this as any sort of disability, but I’m quite sure some others may…. (My daughter regularly ridicules me for wearing socks with my sandals). That said, and probably because of the simple color choices, I kind of stay under the radar so my fashion choices go largely unnoticed. There was a time about 4 or 5 years ago, that I decided to “live on the edge.” I was going to embrace a spirit of change; I was determined to keep my long pants in the suitcase, and to wear shorts while traveling in Africa. I was traveling with a couple of other guys and everything was fine…until we arrived in Ngaoundéré. I got off the plane, and even before he could greet me, Phil, the then resident missionary, began to laugh. I asked him what was so funny. He said, “Do you have any idea what you look like? Socks with your sandals is bad enough, but those legs…those blindingly white legs!!!” I haven’t worn shorts since, and may never be so bold again. :( This weekend we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, and all of what that means, but I am not entirely sure we’re ready for that. The gift of the Holy Spirit always implies change…real life-altering change. The Holy Spirit is indeed A Spirit of Change. So when any church that likes to do what it does because “that’s the way we’ve always done it,” and is typically resistant to any change at all, celebrates the coming of the Spirit, I kind of wonder if they’re ready for what the Spirit may well do…
