The decorations of Advent and Christmas are stored away for another year and we have entered into what the church year calendar calls "ordinary time." Today we read of the beginning of Jesus' ministry as recorded in the Gospel of John: the call of the first disciples, including one who wonders if "any good can come from Nazareth," and then the first "sign" at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. At this ordinary event in an ordinary small village, Jesus does a gracious act, without being asked and without recognition. Maybe that is a "sign" as to how we as faithful followers can respond to the needs, spoken and unspoken, of others.
