Imagine being a young girl and living on the streets in a third world country surviving by your wits and being forced to give your body in order to have a safe place to sleep. This is the plight for many girls around the world.
Incarnation Lutheran Church is partnering with the religious congregation of Our Lady of Compassion (Toulouse), under the direction of a Jesuit priest in Cameroon, at Le Foyer de l’Esperance in Yaounde, Cameroon to change the plight of street girls. Our social worker, Caroline Adjimi, a native of Cameroon who was supported by and was a part of the Incarnation community while she earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work in the US, has left the center to pursue a PhD in London. Sophie Moke Meteke, a seminary student in Cameroon who is working on her master’s degree and has also received educational support from Incarnation, is now working there along with the nuns.
At Foyer de l’Esperance the girls have an opportunity to learn personal and vocational skills, receive schooling, and counseling sessions. The program is currently a day program, but would like to expand to an overnight program so the girls have a safe place at night.
In May 2019 through generous donations, Incarnation was able to provide a financial gift of $4000 to Le Foyer de l’Esperance to begin construction of the long-awaited overnight dormitory so the girls have a safe place at night. The wall is now up and construction on the building had begun, but is currently on hold due to COVID. In addition to providing Sophie’s salary, Incarnation has the privilege and is committed to assisting financially, and possibly with manpower, in the construction of the overnight facility.
Please prayerfully consider making a donation to support this project and our worker, Sophie.
